South Stradbroke Island located 50 minutes south of Brisbane, features 22 km of ocean beaches along with remnant livistona rainforest and melaleuca wetlands. It is accessible via a boat, ferry or water taxi which departs from Runaway Bay marina, about 9 km north of Surfers Paradise.

Stradbroke’s relatively isolated and quiet beaches offer something of an escape from the mainland. You can enjoy the fine surf along the southeast shore or fish in the in the Broadwater.

There is plently of distinct natural ecosystems on the Island. The wallabies that live on the island once also lived all over south-east Queensland. South Stradbroke is a haven for wallabies that have disappeared from the mainland or even that are found nowhere else. This type of Swamp wallaby a-bounds around most of south-east Queensland. But Swamp wallabies with gold-coloured fur live only on South Stradbroke Island. Because they live here isolated and safe from outside influences, these islanders have bred a tribe of wallabies that are a different colour from Swamp wallabies found anywhere else.
